Project Details

Ball was hired by the American power generation company, Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), for a special project for civil work including installation of concrete boiler foundation installations for the nitrate-based fertilizer manufacturer, Yara Belle Plaine Inc. The project was completed in July of 2015.

The Challenge

Working at a fertilization plant in a hazardous environment meant all site visitors and workers were required to undergo stringent health and safety training and procedures. There were also many existing underground utilities to avoid, which made hydrovac excavations necessary.

The work included constructing concrete caissons as deep as 49 feet and pile caps, platform slabs and service duct banks. The boiler foundations and pile caps had to be installed to full cure prior to loading up the boiler equipment. The boiler was en route and work therefore had to be completed within a tight timeline.

The Ball Solution

Babcock and Wilcox is one of our repeat customers in Ontario and we had also completed a previous project for them in Mellville, Saskatchewan.

Quality assurance was monitored by a third party and there were no issues. Ball completed this project ahead of schedule and under budget. The owner and the clients were very happy.

We continue to work with B&W and hope to service them out of province again.
