History

Ball Construction is a legacy company in the Canadian construction industry, with a history dating back to 1923 when Ball Brothers General Contracting was founded. A family-owned business, Ball Construction has succeeded for a century by adhering to its core values of honesty, integrity and quality that previous generations of the Ball family put in place long ago.

In its early days, Ball Construction built houses and small commercial buildings in what was Waterloo County. In the 1930s the company took on larger projects, including the construction of factories and schools. During World War II Ball was involved in building airfields and housing for the Canadian government.

In the post-war years, Ball Construction continued to expand, taking on projects in the healthcare, education, industrial and commercial sectors. Some notable projects completed by Ball Construction include the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in Brantford, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo.

In addition to its construction activities, Ball Construction is well-known in Ontario for its philanthropy. Ball is a province-wide company that has completed projects in almost all Ontario cities and towns, contributing to charities wherever it works.

Today, the Ball Construction ownership group comprises: Jason Ball, President and Cameron Ball, Vice President, Partner-in-Charge, both of whom represent the third generation of Balls to lead the company; Gary Hauck, Vice President, Estimating Manager, who became the third partner in 2005; Rod Aitken, Vice President, Pre-Construction, who joined the company in 2016 as the fourth partner; and Brent Cochrane, Vice President, General Manager – Small Contracts, who became the fifth partner in 2022.

Over its 100-year history, Ball Construction has remained a traditional contractor and currently has some 100 carpenters and labourers on its direct payroll. This has been vital to the company’s success by allowing it to self-perform key functions and thereby adhere to tight schedules. There are now only a handful of traditional contractors like Ball Construction in Ontario.

Ball Construction is proud of its strong community roots in Kitchener-Waterloo and of its family orientation, both of which are fundamental to the company’s identity and success. Ball Construction expects to be around for another 100 years, passing the torch from generation to generation, as they are doing now with Ethan Ball, a fourth-generation Ball in the business. As Ball Construction celebrates its rich history, it looks to the future with great confidence.
